Animal-rights activists are taking credit for postponing the deer hunt in the Long Island town of Lloyd Harbor after dousing the mayor's home and car with red-paint graffiti slogans.
"Messages showing the public's outcry against the hunt were left on all sides of the house, including the garage," the Animal Liberation Front said in an Internet posting.
The mayor, Leland Hairr, was not available for comment yesterday. The vandals' graffiti, painted Tuesday, was still visible yesterday on his house, covered over with a thin layer of white paint.
"There was spray-paint damage, considerable damage. It would be a felony
if we got them," said Lt. Charles Flynn of the Lloyd Harbor police. Many
residents of Lloyd Harbor favor the deer hunt because they see the town's
80-strong herd as a traffic hazard. Deer were involved in 12 car accidents
last year and two so far this year, said police.
